An indulgent adaptation to a typical Reflexology session. Incorporating hot stones into the treatment allows for a deeper sense of relaxation, the release of muscle tension and increased circulation. Hot stones have been shown to lower cortisol levels and help to support the parasympathetic nervous system to help the body reverse the stress reaction.
The use of hot stones as a healing treatment has been around for thousands of years, ancient civilisations believed that hot stones cleansed the body, relaxed the heart, and encouraged grounding of the soul and the mind. The stones have also been used in some cultures to ease menstrual cramps, some women would even hold the stones during labour for 'endurance and strength'. It wasn't until 1990's that the treatment regained its popularity in the western world, where it is now increasingly popular, and is widely recognised for encouraging deep relaxation and its numerous beneficial properties.
During this treatment I will work on your feet, legs and up to your knees, for this reason it is recommended to wear loose fitted clothing. Each individual's toleration of heat will be different, therefore in order to ensure you feel comfortable, I will check the temperature is right for you a few times throughout the session. Using large stones to warm and massage the legs and feet, and small stones to work reflex points and more specific areas, this treatment asks nothing more from you than to relax, put your feet up and allow yourself some time out.
*Contraindications: in some conditions, the application of heat is not recommended, including areas of inflammation, varicose veins, rheumatoid arthritis, or skin conditions that can be aggravated by moisture and heat, such as dermatitis. Cool stones may be used if there are any muscle injuries or inflammation such as varicose veins.
